How to Write an Annotated Bibliography Owlcation An annotated bibliography is a write-up that provides information concerning a particular researched subject. An annotated bibliography is somewhat similar to a bibliography in the sense that it offers an alphabetical list of research sources. Annotated bibliographies give a precise summary of each source discussed and evaluations done in each research work. The topic to write about in your annotated bibliography depends on the source selected. The source in question will also influence the quality and value of your bibliography. Therefore, you need to take the time to decide on the right source since the impact of your selection will follow through up to the end. Perhaps the most important approach to choosing the best source for your bibliography is by asking yourself relevant questions related to the task. Here are some questions necessary for selecting a good source for your annotated bibliography: Establishing whether your sources are relevant is another important aspect that should be taken into account. Since your bibliography is based on research, you cannot risk using an irrelevant source. Reliable sources always frame their research question in a way that they eventually end up offering a solution to the problem. The source should bring out various angles to approaching the research question. Another aspect of a reliable source is the manner in which key concepts have been used. For example, the assessing of existing forms of rights. If the source evaluates a particular body of evidence, then it is worth the use. Finally, the conclusion of the source matters a lot since it will have a bearing on your annotated bibliography. Make sure that the concept of your research project lingers as you search for your source. There are two kinds of annotated bibliography, namely: Descriptive annotated bibliography gives a summary of the source similar to an abstract. It tells us why the source of benefit to the research project and it defines the author’s main talk points and bottom-line without investigating further what the author says. Critical or analytical annotated bibliography, on the other hand, goes an extra mile to examine the strong points and weak points of what is presented. It also describes the author’s conclusions in relation to the research project. If you intend to write an annotated bibliography by yourself, you should understand that the citations must be arranged in proper order. These citations can be arranged in different ways using the APA, Chicago or MLA formats as requested. It is important that you confirm with your lecturer if you are unsure which style you are supposed to use. It is always important to seek a helping hand when things fail to go your way. Online writing service providers are always willing to take up the job from where you were stuck. In that case, it will not be in vain if you had started writing your annotated bibliography and reached a point where you felt that you needed better help from a professional. Concerning writing service providers, ensure that you settle for a reputable company by asking for recommendations from an experienced person, reading reviews and testimonials online, and by asking for samples of work previously done. Use these and more guidelines from our experts to come up with appropriate topics for annotated bibliography. Jun 6, 2016. You gather sources for an Annotated Bibliography in order to get ready to write a research paper. Here are the steps to get started 1. Subject Bibliography Definition & Examples You have just been given an assignment to write an annotated bibliography. Before you begin, you need to know what exactly an annotated bibliography is and how to get started. An annotation is more than just a brief summary of an article, book, Web site or other type of publication. An annotation should give enough information to make a reader decide whether to read the complete work. In other words, if the reader were exploring the same topic as you, is this material useful and if so, why? While an abstract also summarizes an article, book, Web site or other type of publication, it is purely descriptive. Although annotations can be descriptive, they also include distinctive features about an item. Annotations can be evaluative and critical as we will see when we look at the two major types of annotations. An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources (like a reference list). It differs from a straightforward bibliography in that each reference is followed by a paragraph length annotation, usually 100–200 words in length. Depending on the assignment, an annotated bibliography might have different purposes: Descriptive or informative A descriptive or informative annotated bibliography describes or summarizes a source as does an abstract, it describes why the source is useful for researching a particular topic or question, its distinctive features. In addition, it describes the author's main arguments and conclusions without evaluating what the author says or concludes. Retrieved from editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games and the effect they have on people who use them. The author points out that skepticism of new media have gone back to the time of the ancient Greeks, so this controversy surrounding video games is nothing new. The article also points out that most critics of gaming are people over 40 and it is an issue of generations not understanding one another, rather than of the games themselves. As the youth of today grow older, the controversy will die out, according to the author. The author of this article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition to video games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. This article is distinctive in exploring the controversy surrounding video games from a generational standpoint and is written for a general audience. While it points out distinctive features about the item it does not analyze the author's conclusions. Analytical or critical An analytical or critical annotation not only summarizes the material, it analyzes what is being said. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of what is presented as well as describing the applicability of the author's conclusions to the research being conducted. For most of your annotated bibliographies, however, you will be writing analytical or critical annotations. Retrieved from editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games and the effect they have on people who use them. The article points out that most critics of gaming are people over 40 and it is an issue of age not of the games themselves. While the author briefly mentions studies done around the issue of violence and gaming, he does not go into enough depth for the reader to truly know the range of studies that have actually been done in this area, other than to take his word that the research is unsatisfactory. The author of this article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition to video games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. Please note that in these samples, the citations follow the APA format. This article is a good resource for those wanting to begin to explore the controversy surrounding video games, however for anyone doing serious research, one should actually examine some of the research studies that have been done in this area rather than simply take the author's word that opposition to video games is simply due to an issue of generational divide. Write an annotated bibliography Kennedy Library Home I presume that you already are aware of the significance of providing a bibliography list at the end of your theses, essay or research work. This article will focus on the advanced form of bibliography known as ‘annotated bibliography’. The term may sound unfamiliar and even heavy to most of you but once you get the hang of its concept, I am confident; you would want to prefer annotated bibliography over the regular bibliography. It can be defined as,“Annotated bibliography, like any bibliography is composed of an alphabetical list of all sources consulted in the process of carrying out research on a particular topic–in addition to this data, it demands for a brief summary of these sources”. The summary should be based on not more than a hundred and fifty words and state concisely why you think the source used contains accurate, relevant and useful information. The reason why annotated bibliography is preferred over regular bibliography is that by giving a short description of the sources used, you are actually giving an impression to the readers that you are an expert on the subject and you have carried out a valid research which supports well your arguments and claims. You can choose to write annotated bibliography either in brief, short sentences or in the form of paragraphs with of course correct grammar and spellings. Scholars follow different documentation formats such as American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA) and Council of Biology Editors (CBE), depending upon the area or subject of their research. A standard formatting style of writing annotated bibliography does not fit the requirement of the mentioned formats therefore; the scholars came up with four annotation writing techniques. It is important to note here that the choice of annotation style for APA, MLA and CBE depends on supervisor’s consent. A brief explanation four annotation writing styles is provided below: This type of annotation describes the scope of the source used and overall concept of the research work. If you are using informative annotation, then you need to give a summary of the sources used as well as the arguments of your work. Evaluative annotation focuses on the strengths and weakness of the sources used. Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. You should also explain how you think it is relevant to your work and why should or shouldn’t others consult it. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. In this type, the annotation is constructed using the features of all three mentioned types. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. This means combination annotation will contain a summary, brief description and evaluation of source and research work. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living. An annotated bibliography will make your essay paper or research work look more professional and refined and act as reflective of your well informed persona. To write an annotated bibliography research essay or paper check out how to write a bibliography which provides you with step wise guides for creating a standardized and correct bibliography. There are many style manuals with specific instructions on how to format your annotated bibliography. The style you use may depend on your subject discipline or the preference of your instructor.
